The outdoor education industry is a fast growing area and there is a constant demand for qualified and experienced personnel, however without qualification or experience it can be very hard to break into the industry. This is where the Outdoor Instructor Training Programme (OITP) comes in.

OITP is an exciting and unique 6 month training programme. It aims to deliver a comprehensive training package that we believe sets the industry standard in outdoor leadership. The course incorporates current recognised standards in leadership training as well as experience in operating within remote overseas environments. Participants will benefit from the Lifesigns Group’s extensive knowledge and expertise in working in such conditions and will be closely supervised by established instructors and expedition leaders.

Upon completion of OITP the instructor should have an excellent foundation ultimately leading to a career in the outdoors. Alongside the NGB awards and physical skills, you will also learn how an expedition company runs, covering all aspects of the industry from bookings and staffing to greeting clients and equipment safety checks. You will also learn various different styles and methods of teaching - this will be done on real activity sessions with real clients, under the supervision and direction of a qualified and experienced mentor.

Not only will the OITP give the participant all the necessary skills, information, instructions and opportunities to practice in this field, it also ensures that they are up to date on current guidelines, regulations and policies that contribute to running safe and successful outdoor and overseas progammes. These include BS8848, EPA Safety guidelines and enhanced Criminal Records Bureau screening.

Potential instructors will require a passport and have no previous criminal convictions. A driving licence is preferable. The Lifesigns Group encourages all those who believe they have what it takes to become an outdoor instructor. There is a limited number of places for this very intensive and demanding training programme.
